Took your suggestion and rented Dreamgirls. What a surprise! From your comments, I'd expected a stilted, song-intrusive film. But the movie was bright and propulsive; and the music, rather than interrupting the flow, expanded substantially on the story. It was revelatory, and, as you so aptly noted, extremely well done.

Couple of points. The praise for Jennifer Hudson, as well-deserved as it is, does not do justice to Beyonce's debut (at least in a featured role). She tended to be overlooked by most of the reviews I've seen, but she was fabulous. The other performers were also solid, especially an underrated star turn by Eddie Murphy. The only disappointment for me was Jamie Foxx, who felt too light for the role. He seemed to be "acting" his part, rather than inhabiting it as the other principals did. (Don Cheadle might have been a better "fit," though who knows if he can sing.)

Thanks for the heads-up on a movie I know I would have missed otherwise. It was "Dreamy"!
